Captain Michael J. Weaver

Alumni of the State University of New York Maritime College, Capt. Weaver graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Meteorology and Oceanography (Environmental Science), a U.S. Coast Guard Third Mate’s License (Unlimited), and a U.S. Navy commission.  He was designated a Naval Aviator in April of 1997 and holds a Master’s degree in Organizational Science from George Washington University.

Weaver’s sea assignments include an initial operational tour with the HSL-42 Proud Warriors with deployments in USS Enterprise (CVN 65) Battle Group aboard USS Gettysburg (CG 64) and the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) Battle Group aboard USS San Jacinto (CG 56) in support of Operation Desert Fox.  Following his first shore tour assignments, Weaver reported to Commander, Carrier Strike Group Two as Flag Lieutenant aboard USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75). 

In 2006, Weaver returned to the Proud Warriors of HSL-42 for his department head tour and led a two-plane detachment in USS Bulkeley (DDG 84), escort for the USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) Expeditionary Strike Group, during a combat deployment in support of Operations Iraqui Freedom and Enduring Freedom. He concluded his tour as Operations Officer and was recognized as the 2007 HSL-42 Officer of the Year and selected by his peers for the 2007 Commander, Naval Air Forces Leadership Award.  From May 2013 to August 2014, Weaver served as Commanding Officer of HSM-46 where his squadron earned the coveted Battle “E” Award for Combat Effectiveness. 


Ashore, Weaver was selected for the Navy Washington D.C. Internship Program where he served on the Joint Chiefs of Staff (Dominant Maneuver and Assessment Division, J8) and the Navy Staff (Air Warfare Requirements, N78).  Weaver later returned to the Airwolves of HSL-40 to serve as flight instructor and training department head for a period that earned the Airwolves the Theodore Ellyson Award for FRS Aviator Production Excellence.  Prior to command, Weaver completed his tour in the Office of the Secretary of Defense as the Military Assistant to the Principal Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Policy and later as the Military Assistant to Assistant Secretary of Defense for Global Security Affairs. 

In 2010, he returned to HSM-40 to qualify in the SH-60B and MH-60R and serve as executive officer.  Following command, Weaver served in U.S. Southern Command as the Deputy Chief for Combating Transnational Organized Crime. In January 2019, he assumed command of Helicopter Maritime Strike Wing Atlantic as Commodore. Weaver currently serves as Chief of Staff, U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command/U.S. 4th Fleet. 


Weaver is a Joint Qualified Officer and personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal (2), Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4), Joint Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2), and numerous unit, campaign and service medals.
